The Bordeaux Metabolome facility is a research facility that provides advanced equipment and expertise for studying the metabolome, lipidome and metabolic fluxes, with a strong focus on plant and plant-derived samples. Supported by INRAE, the University of Bordeaux, and CNRS, the facility brings together specialised technologies and scientific know-how to support metabolic research and make these resources accessible to the wider scientific community.

The facility develops and applies analytical strategies and bioinformatics tools for metabolomics, metabolic phenotyping, lipidomics and fluxomics. Its activities contribute to research in plant functional genomics, genetics, pathology, ecophysiology and systems biology, as well as studies of plant-derived products and pharmacological approaches. Typical research themes include the acquisition and interpretation of metabolomic profiles, biochemical phenotyping, analysis of metabolic dynamics and the functional study of lipid metabolism.

To support these activities, the facility operates a wide range of advanced instrumentation, including nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry systems, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry instruments, and automated high-throughput phenotyping platforms. These technologies enable detailed analysis and characterisation of metabolites and metabolic pathways.

The Bordeaux Metabolome facility is also part of the French national research infrastructures MetaboHUB and PHENOME-EMPHASIS, contributing its expertise and technological capabilities to national networks dedicated to metabolomics and plant phenotyping. Overall, the facility acts as a collaborative research infrastructure supporting national and international projects through cutting-edge analytical capabilities, methodological development and expert guidance in metabolomics and related fields.

The Réseau Francophone de Métabolomique et Fluxomique (RFMF) is a French-speaking scientific network dedicated to the development of metabolomics and fluxomics. Founded in 2005, the RFMF brings together researchers, engineers, and professionals from academia and industry who contribute to the global analysis of metabolism. Metabolomics focuses on the study of small molecules (metabolites) present in living organisms, complementing genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics to phenotype biological systems and characterize metabolic mechanisms at the cellular or tissue level. Its fields of application are broad, including health, nutrition, agriculture, sustainable development, biotechnology, environmental science, and pharmacology. Since its creation, the RFMF has conducted numerous activities to support the French-speaking metabolomics community: scientific meetings (Journées Scientifiques), researcher schools, workshops, travel grants, training grants, and a directory of research sites and competencies.

In 2013, the RFMF became affiliated with the international Metabolomics Society. In 2014, it launched the RFMF Junior network for members under 33, fostering exchanges among early-career researchers. In 2015, the network extended its scope to the entire French-speaking world, becoming the Réseau Francophone de Métabolomique et Fluxomique. Today, the RFMF serves as a key observatory for the structuring and evolution of metabolomics and fluxomics in the French-speaking scientific community, and actively promotes the visibility of its members on the international stage.”
